Now I learn...

The nerve of some people!
Mar. 30th, 2005 06:38 pmIt's been a pretty stressful week so far. The roommates and I have decided to part ways at the end of our lease in July. We're very different people. But at least it lowered some of the tension now that we know there is a definite amount of time left we have to get along with each other. And I am looking at this as an opportunity to find a new roommate that hopefully I have more in common with.
And to seal this news, last night someone (likely drunk) stole my roommate's birdfeeder! It wasn't really fancy mind you, but it was one of those neat poles with a feeder on top that you can hang more feeders off of. She had a couple more feeders hanging off and even a hummingbird feeder (although I don't think we attracted any hummingbirds). Late last night someone took that and either took or was trying to take the neighbors grill when the neighbor ran them off - birdfeeder and all. Strangely, I seem to be taking this much harder than my roommate, and I'm not entirely sure why...

Gotta love Mom!
Mar. 14th, 2005 08:44 pmI've had several health concerns lately and I've been giving consideration to the vegetarian in me. I still have lots to learn, so if anyone has advice, I'm all ears. But in the meantime, I had to share this crazy story...

Happy New Year!
Jan. 1st, 2005 05:10 amHappy New Year everyone! I finally got my computer working again. I hope everyone had a good holiday. I've been off work this entire last week, but the only 'down' time I've had I spent watching the Tsunami news. Today was the first day that actually felt like vacation.
I'm having dinner with my Mom tomorrow. She's fixing smoked sausage and sour kraut (I think this is her 'cabbage requirement'). She'll also fix black-eyed peas, even though we don't eat them... ahhh traditions! She's had a really bad year because of her health, so I'm just grateful she can do this and that I can be there to poke fun *g* For all our differences, she remains my mom and I love her.
As I sit here typing at 5:15 in the a.m., I got a visitor. My best friend and soul mate just came downstairs and collapsed on the couch. He's got a flu-like bug that's making him burn up and then freeze. My roommate (his girlfriend), in her drunken state - drunk, on New Years!?! - kicked him out of bed because his sweating is "gross". She'll probably feel bad about this tomorrow and spend the next week making it up to him, but in the mean time, I gave him some Nyquil and he's snoring soundly. It kind of makes me glad that I'm the night owl that I am and was up to helping.
Well, I think I'll head off to bed myself now - there's a whole new year to dream about.

End of a Vacation....
Nov. 28th, 2004 11:30 pmWell, it's back to work for me tomorrow morning. I've not managed to do very many things this week, but then I didn't really plan to. I've read a few great stories, but still have an inbox overflowing with more. I did manage to do the mountain of laundry and I did manage to cook a pretty eatable (if I do say so myself) Thanksgiving dinner. But otherwise, I have enjoyed not having to 'do' anything.
Question: Do you still consider it hibernation when you get up to nibble leftovers and watch West Wing DVDs?

I am on Vacation at last!
So far, I bought a parts car and towed it home. This week I plan to tear it down, take what I need and scrap it. I can't wait to work the engine over and get it in my car. I'm so giddy now I'm about to burst.
Tonight, however, I am staying in, watching a DVD or two and hopefully beginning to catch up on all the news and stories that I've been neglecting.
And the best part...... everyone I know thinks I went away!!!!! Ahhhh peaceful bliss, just me and my kitties.

I've got to find a new place to live! I live in Kentucky - like the tobacco capital. Last year our city council passed an ordinance banning smoking in all public establishments. After much ado, it took effect earlier this year. In their infinite wisdom, they neglected to put enough into this ordinance to effectively enforce it such that 'almost' all public places are smoke free, but some bars would rather take a chance and pay the fines rather than lose the patrons (Many community pubs, etc. closed altogether). Smoker or not, I've fought this issue all the way. I've always felt it should be a right of a business owner to decide such things for themselves. If the city wanted to intervene, they should issue license much like liquor. It would mean more money for the city (and wouldn't have ended in the raise in taxes again this year), it would lead to fewer pubic smoking establishments since many businesses wouldn't apply for such a license. And, those businesses that do want to have smoking - like our now closed cigar bar - could have the right of free enterprise. But I digress...
This morning on the radio, the local DJs started in on one of their 'usual' discussions of news. They were going off about a new ban effective at midnight this morning that now extended this ban to "all passengers, including drivers, in all vehicles". They said that our newly elected council (yeah, we voted most of the old ones out last week) passed this by a 80% margin last night. I knew that our ordinances never go into effect literally overnight, yet the council has done some shady things before (which I won't even begin...). So, half of my morning is spent trying to get the minutes to last nights meeting. The web site was down, no one downtown would answer the phone... It was on the noon radio show that a retraction was issued from the station and the morning DJs will likely be fired for their farce.
On a further note, we pay taxes to the federal, state, and local government. We pay extra taxes for our state and cities mistakes and scandals over and over. After an increase in their fee just months ago, our trash collection has been reduced from twice to once per week (and won't let us recycle glass bottles unless we haul them ourselves). I've been through nine Obgyns in the last five years because the doctors can't afford the ninety thousand dollar per year insurance. And worst of all, our 'open minded' citizens just voted to amend our state constitution to provide that a marriage shall be defined as 'between one man and one woman' - excluding all else.
Perhaps I'm just having a bad day, but does anyone live in, or know of a place with less shit than this?
added notes: our local news just announced that a local police officer, who was speeding in his cruiser without lights or sirens and hit and killed a woman, has been charged with speeding and reckless driving and will resume normal duties immediately. And, our mayor is now spending our taxpayer money to sue the radio station regarding this mornings prank smoking ban.

I have been so busy lately, but I finally got a chance to write!
Well, after my e-bay fiasco, I towed my car to a friend's house. As it turns out, my friend's roommate has decided to buy it from me. No money yet, but it's still a load off...
Also, this same friend is going to Germany next spring. I think he wants to visit France, England, and Italy while in Europe. He asked me if he needed any vaccinations. It's been over a decade since I was last in Europe, but I didn't need anything except a visa for certain places like Prague. Does anyone else know?
