Well, I've managed to get a few things to work here on my LJ, but I can tell I still have a long way to go. Thanks a bunch to everyone -especially Lilagrubb - for all the support and help. Now onward to playing with icons...

What kind of software are folks using for this stuff. I've got a photoedit thingie but it never does what I want...

And yeah, so far I'm having a blast.

I use SmartDraw Photo. It's cheaper than PhotoShop. It might not be as good as PhotoShop, I don't know, but it's good enough for what I want. I just use it for making icons and minor editing of photos. I don't know if it would be possible to do photo manips like Sal does with it.

Maybe you should try Fireworks or Photoshop, they're great for making icons. I like the one you've got right now! It's v. nice :)

Thanks so much! I did this icon with my roommates edit software for her camera? I have LOADs of pics of my kitties but sadly I'm not a very good photographer so usually I get this brown/grey tabby blur. But thanks for the advice on software, it would be nice to get something that 'fixes' my blunders. Also, I keep looking around and everyone else's puts me to shame *joins icon challenged anonymous*

No probs. Don't worry, it just takes practice. I was a crappy icon-er when I first started out, but I'm a lot better now. You just get used to the software and learn what you can and can't use for an icon. I think the same goes for a digital camera.
